Class Descriptions
Classes
At this stage of a child’s development, routines become a normal part of the day and help promote a sense of stability, security, and confidence. Children in this age range are becoming more aware of others around them and are introduced to activities where they can learn to share and work together to complete a task. Center time is in a small group setting where they become familiar with moving around the classroom and rotating after a short period of time. As these children develop their routine, potty–training becomes a more familiar theme. During this time, our teachers will partner with parents to help reinforce the efforts that are being taken at home in potty training. Children are encouraged to begin using the bathroom independently as there is a requirement in the 3s classroom to be 100% potty trained.
Children learn best through play and exploration at this age, and the teachers incorporate this in a large portion of their day. This classroom has 8-10 children with two teachers which allows for lots of hands–on activities including art, carpet/circle time, center time, music and movement, and lesson–based imaginative play. The theme/unit of study changes throughout the year and includes a new letter, number, and concept for the class to focus on.
Basic independent skills will begin to develop and there will be a stronger understanding of one to two step instructions. Children at this age are expressive and will use both verbal and nonverbal communication with their teachers. They are continually using receptive language skills, an understanding of information provided in a variety of ways (sounds, words, movement, gestures, signs, symbols).
Bible time is part of our daily routine as they begin to hear and learn more about Jesus.
Requirements for older 2s:
1. Students must turn two between September 2nd, 2025, and March 1st, 2026. Students must be 2.5 years old to begin this class.
2. All immunizations must be presented on form 3231 or a medical/religious exemption must be provided. No expired forms will be accepted.
At this age, a child will begin to show an increased attention span and the ability to sit for longer, more detailed activities. These activities will introduce tasks such as proper pencil grasp, name tracing, and other areas of improving fine motor skills. It is common at this age to begin demonstrating a stronger desire for independence and doing things on their own. Example–led learning is important as the independence of a child increases, so the teachers will show how to complete tasks more independently while still providing assistance as needed. While every child continues to learn at his or her own pace, it is an expectation that the students in this classroom setting are able to complete tasks that have two to three step instructions. Children at this age are expressive and will begin to strengthen their verbal communication and vocabulary with their teachers. They have mastered receptive language skills, an understanding of information provided in a variety of ways (sounds, words, movement, gestures, signs, symbols).
Our 3s classes are focused on a combination of styles, including both teacher–led learning and independent exploration. The day is full of hands–on art projects, building and creating, music and movement, Bible time, and lesson–based imaginative play. These class sizes range from 12–14 children with two teachers. The theme/unit of study changes throughout the year and includes a new letter, number, and concept for the class to focus on.
Bible time is an important part of the student’s daily routine as they begin to explore more about Jesus and the Bible. The 3s classes attend Chapel once a week.
Requirements:
1. Children must be 3 by September 1st of the year entering into the program.
2.All immunizations must be presented on form 3231 or a medical/religious exemption must be provided. No expired forms will be accepted.
3. Children must be completely potty trained and able to use the restroom independently.
One of the main objectives with this age group is to fine–tune social and academic skills for a smoother transition when they move to kindergarten. FBCJ Preschool works closely with the local public school to provide the resources and knowledge to help each student thrive after preschool. Per age-appropriate standards, the areas of focus include self–control, listening, being respectful, following multi–step directions, independence, self–confidence, fine motor skills, and cooperation. Although these skills do not need to be mastered at this age, there is the expectation of a level of ability from the student in each of these areas. Our Pre–K4 classes provide a fun learning environment while preparing the students for full day public or private kindergarten. A typical class size for this age is 12–16 students with one to two teachers. The smaller class size gives the teacher the ability to provide more small group interaction and productive engagement with each child. The theme/unit of study changes throughout the year and includes a new letter, number, and concept for the class to focus on.
Bible time is an important part of their daily routine as they begin to explore more about Jesus and the Bible. The Pre-K4 classes attend Chapel once a week.
Requirements:
1. Children must be four years old by September 1st of the year entering into the program.
2.All immunizations must be presented on form 3231 or a medical/religious exemption must be provided. No expired forms will be accepted.
3. All children must be fully potty trained and able to go to the bathroom without assistance.
The Pre-K5 class is designed to provide a strong bridge between Pre-K4 and Kindergarten by offering young five-year-olds an additional year of academic and social readiness in a nurturing, structured environment. This class is ideal for students who will benefit from continued growth, confidence-building, and maturity before entering a full-day public or private kindergarten program.
This program is not remedial in nature and is not intended to replace kindergarten. Instead, it serves as an enriching year of preparation that strengthens foundational skills while introducing more advanced learning objectives. Pre-K5 allows students to continue developing without repeating a class or grade. Students are encouraged to enter kindergarten after completing this program.
Pre-K5 may serve as a natural continuation for returning Pre-K4 students or as an independent class for new families. Completion of Pre-K4 is not required for enrollment, provided age requirements are met.
The Pre-K5 curriculum focuses on building strong academic foundations while moving at an engaging and appropriately challenging pace. Instruction incorporates elements of Abeka’s K5 Kindergarten curriculum and includes reading readiness, writing development, sight words, word families, and early literacy skills. Math instruction emphasizes numeracy and problem-solving through hands-on activities. Students are also introduced to basic concepts in science and social studies.
In addition to academics, the program supports social-emotional growth to promote a smooth transition into kindergarten. Areas of focus include self-control, attentive listening, respect, following multi-step directions, independence, self-confidence, fine motor development, and cooperation. While mastery is not expected at this age, students are encouraged to grow in these areas within a supportive classroom environment.
Class sizes typically range from 8 to 10 students with one to two teachers, allowing for meaningful small-group instruction and individualized attention. Instruction is organized around rotating themes and units of study, each featuring focused letters, numbers, and core concepts.
Faith-based learning is an important part of the daily routine. Students participate in Bible time and attend Chapel once each week as they continue to grow spiritually.
FBCJ Preschool works closely with local public schools to remain aligned with kindergarten expectations and to provide families with the resources and guidance needed for a successful transition.
